Gabriel Chrisman, Gibson Memorial Library

On October 11th, Mr. Gabriel Chrisman, director of the Gibson Memorial Library, was welcomed back to visit the ASPIRE Super Kids.

He shared his unique passion for bicycles - everything from riding them, repairing them AND even building them. He explained to us how his interests began and how it grew.  It started when he was a child, learning to ride a bike.  Then it sparked a curiosity to learn everything he could about them.  He read books about the history of bicycles, the early designs and how they were instrumental in the design of the first automobiles.  He researched how they were built, taught himself how to fix them, and how to build them from scratch.

He has become quite an expert on the subject.  He was even commissioned to build a replica of an antique bicycle to be featured in the HBO series “The Gilded Age”.  He discussed how technology helped him to research the specs needed to design that bicycle and even locate an authentic seat from India and the perfect-sized chain made in Japan.  He emphasized how books were a valuable asset to learning the information he needed to meet his 5-week deadline for that special project.

Many thanks to Gabriel Chrisman for sharing his expertise with the ASPIRE Super Kids.  Good luck to him in his new endeavor at Graceland University.
